Haneef N. Nelson is a trumpeter, composer and educator residing in the Hartford area for the last 20+ years. He currently serves as the Professor of Jazz Trumpet at UMass Amherst and Western Connecticut State University where he teaches Jazz Trumpet, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz History, Jazz Pedagogy, Private Lesson Pedagogy, and Hip-Hop History. He holds a B.M. in African American Music Study from the Hartt School, a M.M. in Jazz Composition and Arranging from UMass Amherst, and is in pursuit of his Doctorate in Composition at the Hartt School.
His professional experiences include working with Charles Tolliver, Feya Faku, Frank Lacy, Joe Ford, Craig Handy, Steve Davis, Gary Smulyan, George Cables, Brandee Younger, The Powell Family, Musiq Soulchild, Danton Boller, Abraham Burton, Wayne Escoffrey, Jesse Hameen, Dee Alexander, Donn Trenner, Avery Sharpe and Yoron Israel among others.
In addition to being a regular member of the Hartford Jazz Orchestra, he also performs with the Sean Nelson Jazz Orchestra, Hartford Jazz Project, Jason Robinson Big Band, Makanda Project, his own Quintet/Sextet, and several other groups.
Haneef has been blessed and fortunate to have studied with the likes of Dr. Donald Byrd, Jackie McLean, Dave Burns, Jeff Holmes, Felipe Salles, Dr. Gilda Lyons, Susan Botti, and Roger Murtha to name a few.
